What is Sodium hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate is a salt form of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. It belongs to the glycosaminoglycan family of carbohydrates and comprises repeating disaccharide units of N-acetylglucosamine and glucuronic acid. It is commonly used in the medical and cosmetic industries.

The sources of sodium hyaluronate can be both animal and bacterial. In the past, it was commonly extracted from rooster combs. Still, it is more widely produced through bacterial fermentation, where bacteria are genetically modified to produce high yields of hyaluronic acid.
